Calvert High School’s Green School Team is promoting environmental awareness throughout the community by organizing a celebration. “Flower Power Day” will be a day of honoring outstanding members of our school community.
Due to reasons stated in our summary, our school has not held an official celebration since our last recertification. This year we have completed plans to bring back our green school celebration after a long period of time without one. Hopefully this can become a yearly event. More will be decided on that after we actually have the celebration and decide how it went.
Our Celebration team has decided to make this a true Calvert High School Community Celebration. All businesses, students, and staff who helped us or participated within the Green School framework in some way are invited. We have also decided to invite students from our elementary feeder schools. At the celebration, we will have each group plant a native species grown by our Agricultural Science and Environmental Science students
We hope that this will encourage members of our community to give back to the environment in the future. Our plan is shown below.
Early March: See emails below. Contact Principal’s and Green School coordinators of our feeder elementary schools: Calvert ES, Barstow ES, and Mutual ES by email. We will request that each Green School Coordinator identify teachers within their school that do environmentally related projects. We will ask the GSC's to then send those names to us.
Middle of March: Follow up with unanswered emails from GSC's by phone.
Early April: See letters below Contact teachers to pick 6-10 students who they believe have gone the extra mile when it comes to serving the community and the environment. Nominations will be sent to us. Contact businesses like Calvert Marine Museum, PEARL, American Chestnut Land Trust, and Calvert Forestry Board and invite them to the event.
Middle of April: See letter below Begin the selection process of the nominated students. Students will be picked based on their involvement with environment. Each student that is picked will have a chance to come to our school on June 10 to put a native plant in the ground in their honor.
Contact Students and their Parent/Guardians.
End of April: Follow up on unanswered letters from teachers, students, community partners.
Early/Middle of May: Make follow-up phone calls to community partners to get an accurate count of the number of representatives that will be attending the celebration. Make final determinations on food/drinks needed based on RSVP's received. Make final determinations on which garden areas will be planted this year. Finalize transportation, substitute, and planting plans.

Celebrating EARTH HOUR
Calvert High School is celebrating Earth Hour a day early and during a different time of the day. On March 18, following a week long blitz of public service announcements on our school television broadcasts, we are asking our entire school to refrain from using electricity in individual classrooms from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. One of our PSA's is shown below.
